CineBrass is revolutionary in its power and simplicity for recreating the sound of the orchestral brass section. The library was designed by composers, for composers, with direct feedback from the film music community during its development. The result is a brass library that is easy to use, composer-friendly, with unparalleled recording quality.

CineBrass does not require you to purchase any sampling software, and is licensed to work with the free Kontakt Player. All you need is a sequencer like Logic, Cubase, Digital Performer, LIVE, Cakewalk, or even Apple GarageBand and you’ll be up and running. You can also use CineBrass with your favorite notation software such as Sibelius or Finale.

ARTICULATIONS PATCHES

All of the Articulations Patches in CineBrass contain shorts of various lengths and dynamics, as well as sustains. We recorded multiple repetitions per note and multiple dynamics as follows:

Quarters Tenuto @ 4xRR p to ff
Halves Marcato @ 2xRR p to ff
Sustains with smooth dynamic morphin

Also, all of the mapping in the Articulations Patches is dynamic, so you can select from 5 intuitive presets in the user interface. A custom mapping grid is offered, for users who wish to customize the parameters beyond the presets. Every parameter and value is changeable, and nearly any combination is possible. Of course, if you are not a tweaker, you can stick with one of the 5 preset mappings (recommended).

TRUE LEGATO PATCHES

What is True Legato? True legato means that we sampled all of the intervalic leaps throughout the ranges, both upwards and downwards, for each brass section. When you play a True Legato patch, it instantly analyses the intervals you play, then plays the appropriate transitional leap between the notes. The result is a smooth and realistic legato performance. For all sections we did this at 2 dynamic levels, again using our dynamic morphing to blend seamlessly from piano to fortissimo.

A key feature of our True Legato patches, is the Polyphonic Legato mode. This mode allows you to play lines of 2 or more notes simultaneously, while maintaining the appropriate transition samples between all notes. This is especially effective when playing chords that need to connect in a realistic way.

RECORDING CINEBRASS

Sampling in Los Angeles is no easy task. Especially when you want to do it the right way. This library is the first of its kind, because it is the first commercial library to be recorded under a special AFM (American Federation of Musicians) Sampling Agreement. The product of this, is that for every purchase, a percentage of the sales go directly to the musicians who played on the CineBrass session. Not only does it go to the musicians, but we’ve extended it to the copyists, the engineers and everyone who had a critical role in producing the library. Important to note that this does not effect the user agreement, and CineBrass can be used like any other Cinesamples library in your music productions.

Why do this? We want to keep recording here in Los Angeles, with the best musicians, at the best scoring stages in the world. We are grateful to the AFM for having the vision to do this with us, and we look forward to extending this to all our future libraries.

How was Morphestra created?

True Strike, the first volume in the series, focuses on orchestral percussion and features 51 orchestral percussion instruments in multiple concert hall mic positions. All instruments were recorded at 88.2/24 and are offered at 44.1/24. 16 GB of hard disk space is required.

Timpani
The timpani is one of the biggest instrument banks found in True Strike. You will find an extensive list of playing techniques: up to 6 dynamics, sustained and dampened notes, tremolo, tremolo crescendo in three lengths, crescendo-decrescendo and hard mallet fortissimo. Suspenseful special effects such as pedal bends and cymbal/bowl on timpani.

Gran casa & snares
True Strike is aimed at cinematic use. Therefore the gran casa and snare ensemble are the most powerful and deep recordings you will find. Kirk Hunter's Orchestral Brass Ensembles (henceforth known as OBE) consists — perhaps unsurprisingly — of orchestral brass ensembles recorded in a 2500-seater concert hall, using players (uncredited, as usual) from an American symphony orchestra. Two mic positions were used, one 30 feet from the players, the second 100 feet back to capture the hall reverb (see diagram, right). This lavish use of space created a collection of big-sounding samples known as the 'symphonic' recordings.

In order to offer users sonic choice, Kirk also recorded a second set of samples in the same hall, but first made some significant musical and acoustic changes; section sizes were scaled down, and huge baffles were positioned on stage and in the hall's ceiling, creating a smaller, more focused room sound (the layout for this setup is shown on page 138). The second sample set, less reverberant and more present-sounding than the first, are called the 'chamber' recordings.

Uniquely, Mr. Hunter also deliberately varied the sizes of his trumpet, trombone and French horn ensembles for different dynamic performances, using (for example) eight French horn players to play fortissimo samples, but only four players on the pianissimo notes. According to Kirk, this technique was not pre-planned, but devised during the sampling sessions in order to create a tighter, warmer, and more intimate sound on the softer notes (see the 'Instrumentation' box on page 136 for more details).

Dance producers lusting after hot brass licks should look elsewhere for their funky soul fodder, as there are no chords, riffs or phrases here; the library basically consists of chromatically sampled single notes, supplemented by tone and semitone trills, a few swells and 'rips' (slides up to a sustained note). This is really one for players and composers.
