One of my all-time favourite movies. A nihilistic piece of cinema from the backyards of America with a fantastic cast and an excellent performance by Dennis Hopper both in front and behind the camera. For some reason, this movie never really got a proper release back in the old days, but is today somewhat of a cult-item.

I'm sorry to say that this is some sort of a TV rip with very bad quality. It seems to have been filmed off the screen, with what seems to be Norweigan subtitles.

But this is the only available version out there, and also it seems to be the longest one, running up toward 123 minutes rather than 104 as stated on IMDB. This is probably a result of that the person who recorded this off the TV also included the commercials, or a following show. I'm not sure since I haven't seen it yet.

Description: Six juvenile delinquents are subjected to a social experiment by the authorities, who place them in a home in the inner city of Stockholm. Krister is a naive young social worker who is assigned to observe their behaviour; he believes in the goodness of man and that everybody can change their ways. The overall supervisor and mind behind the experiment is a middle-aged man refered to as the Inspector. He represents the hypocracy of the system, and is also the one who eventually goes on to rape one of the boys.

The experiment is one of observation: the boys are free to go wherever they want and whenever they want as long as they reside in the home that was appointed to them by the authorities. As the days go by, we get to follow them into a life of cheap thrills and petty crimes. But what could have been the start of a friendship between them, soon enough escalates into anarchy and meaningless cruelty.

The title of the film is a quote from the Bible that reads -- "Then St. Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?' Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven." -- Seventy times seven being 490, this film is about the unforgivable 491 sin.

One of the most controversial movies in the history of Swedish cinema (if not THE most controversial), made during the rebelious 1960s by Vilgot Sjöman who would gain international acclaim with "I am Curious Yellow". A biting social commentary like any product of its time, based upon the equally controversial novel by Lars Görling. Strangly enough this film still remains unreleased in Sweden.

Upon its theatrical premiere two scenes had to be cut out, one involving a dog raping a girl and a scene depicting a homosexual rape. This release was recorded from the TV and is the best (if not the only) version available. Saying this I also have to mention that the picture and the sound quality are truly excellent. On the downside there are no English subtitles (for obvious reasons), but don't let this discourage you from seeing it.

The contract gave Warner Home Video the rights to sell the pilot episode as a movie on video in Europe (not knowing whether the pilot would result in a series, Warner wanted to ensure they could make their money back.) Description: Set in a rural community in the 1930s Norway. 12-year-old Unn moves to a small village to live with her aunt after her unmarried mother dies, where she makes a new friend, the 11-year-old Siss. One day she admits to have secret and indecent fantasies about her new girlfriend, and admits to her that she is afraid she will not be let into heaven whe she dies.

On the following day Unn pauses beside an enchantingly beautiful frozen waterfall. To her it is an "ice palace." She enters the shining castle and begins to wander through it's beautiful crystalline chambers. Unfortunately she becomes hopelessly lost. The ice then begins to melt, and though she makes a valiant effort to make it through the icy water to the entrance, she fails and perishes from cold and exhaustion. Her friend's name is the final word uttered from her freezing lips.

Based upon the novel by the Norwegian author Tarjei Vesaas, and considered a classic of Norwegian literature.

Description: As the title suggests this is a surreal anti-biography of Pablo Picasso and his adventures as they might as well have looked like if they were painted by him. Already in his childhood, Picasso shows talent for painting and is sent to the Academy of Arts in Madrid. He eventually ends up in Paris like all the other painters, living in poverty until he is discovered by a rich American millionaire and starts earning money. In his journey through life he gets to mingle with famous people of the 20s, such as Matisse, Rembrandt, Hemingway, van Gogh, Hitler and Churchill!

This movie contains none less than 10 languages, most of the dialogue being short and very simple, sometimes meaning something different than it seems and other times being just nonsense. In this way it's filled with symbolism, and things are never quite what they seem. Directed by Tage Danielsson, Swedish filmmaker and political satirist known for his witty sense of humor, this film marks one of many collebarations with the equally popular writer and comedian Hans Alfredsson, known for his absurd and intensely comic Monty Python-esque brand of comedy. Chances are you've never heard of either of them, but as in case with any other great artists, I'm sure in time you will.

Description: Flushed with the success of his Elvira Madigan, Swedish director Bo Widerberg concocted another story of teenaged love juxtaposed with social upheaval in Adalen 31. The title refers to the 1931 worker's strike against the Adalen paper mill in Northern Sweden. As the strikers debate whether or not to use violence in pressing their complaint, the daughter of the factory owner is impregnated by the son of a worker. The strike is "resolved" in a bloody confrontation between the laborers and government troops, resulting in the death of the boy - and, on a greater scale, the collapse of Sweden's Conservative Government. The girl ultimately opts for an abortion, which partially explains why Adalen 31 was originally given an "X" rating by the then-conservative Motion Picture Association of America.

Considered by audience and critics alike - and even Ingmar Bergman himself - as one of the best Swedish movies in history, it remains today something of a cult-film. Skarsgard gives the performance of a lifetime, and the director Alfredsson, whose short story "An Evil Man" the movie is based on, gives an excellent and chilling performance as the evil Mr. Hoeglund.

Description: Max von Sydow gives an excellent performance as the rich and heartless industrialist who bears close resemblence to Mr Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol", or Mr Burns from "The Simpsons". He lives with an opressed wife and - as he himself puts it - an idiot for a son, in a large castle on a landscape which he himself "bought with his own money", a fact he more than gladly reminds other people of, especially if they are poor.

The son takes no intrest in his father's business and lacks social skills. In his relation to other people, including his own mother, he realizes he is becoming a splitting image of his father. In a fit of rage he attempts to assasinate his father but fails and is thrown into a remote lake where he gets stuck with his feet in the mud and head above water. Unable to free himself he soon learns to adjust to the new life in the lake and becomes one wth the nature, literally speaking. He survives the winter and is flushed out with the spring-flood into a whole new world.

A bizarre blend of satire and enviromental cuationary tale, to say the least.

Description: Mrs. Van Houten has shown signs of losing touch with reality, and her husband discusses possible treatment with Dr. Caligari, who says Mrs. Van Houten has a disease of the libido. The staff want Dr. Caligari removed from their facility due to her controversial experiments in which she transfers glandular brain fluids from one patient to another. Her unconventional idea is to cure people by introducing equally opposite traits to balance out disturbed minds. Two of her main patients, Mr. Pratt, a cannibalistic serial killer, and Mrs. Van Houten, a nymphomanical housewife, are the primary subjects of her mindswapping.

Originally, and briefly, billed as "Dr. Caligari 3000" when it debuted at selected theaters in 1989, the film promptly faded into obscurity. The film is considered a cult classic and was filmed entirely inside of large studios in a bizarre landscape combination of both artificial outdoor and indoor scenes merged together. The overdramatic, stylistic acting is amusing and pokes fun at cliches and stereotypes and thus it has the film play out as an artistc performance piece rather than a standard film.
