Time and tide [HK-Movie] DVDRip 2000
Time and tide ![]() Movie Info: Director: Tsui Hark Cast: Nicholas Tse, Wu Bai, Candy Lo, Cathy Tsui, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang Original Title: Seunlau ngaklau Production Country: Hong Kong 2000 Review: The Hong Kong action master Tsui Hark's ''Time and Tide'' is a woozy, disconnected piece of filmmaking about drugs, rock 'n' roll and the aftermath of sex. Though a certain adrenaline rush comes from the jazzed-up filmmaking, there's not much going on, which may explain why Mr. Hark's attention span seems so short; it's a mochaccino daydream. The film is still a recovery from the by-the-numbers movies Mr. Hark made with Jean-Claude Van Damme (''Double Team,'' ''Knock Off'') that were all technique and no inspiration. ''Time and Tide'' is soaked with blood, which is the bond between Tyler (Nicholas Tse) and Jack (Wu Bai). Tyler works for a mob boss, Uncle Ji (Anthony Wong, who has spent a great deal of time playing cartel heads and other bad guys), and dreams of a more exciting life. It's the life Tyler imagines that Jack led while living as a mercenary in the jungles of South America, an existence that bangs around in Jack's head like ''Apocalypse Now'' cut with a buzz saw. When some of Jack's old mercenary buddies invade Hong Kong looking to damage a drug cartel, the tie between Jack and Tyler is further complicated. To add to this mess, Tyler has been stalking the policewoman he impregnated after a passionate episode, and she is unwilling to have any contact with him. Both the baby and the violence are imminent. The picture, which opens today at Village East Cinema (Second Avenue at 12th Street, East Village), could be compared to the blurry, loamy romantic rush of Wong Kar-wai, who began his career as an action moviemaker and drifted into his own brand of potent and dissociative poetry. To the extent that the plot doesn't really hold together, that comparison is not a bad one. ''Time and Tide'' even has a title similar to those of Mr. Wong's works, as he has evolved into a chronicler of moments, capturing the rush of blood in each chamber of the heart. Mr. Hark, too, is interested in the propulsive thud of pop culture, but unlike Mr. Wong, he works with an eye on the audience; he wants to keep his viewers happy. Mr. Hark has the instincts of a born entertainer; his ''Once Upon a Time in China'' movies, starring Jet Li, had the verve of a man who loved topping himself. If ''Time and Tide'' is a tone poem, it's one blazing from the barrel of a gun, and Mr. Hark likes to watch the audience jump with enjoyment from the bang. As much as he might like to, he can't slow down the rhythms of the picture enough to make a more mature work, as he apparently wants to. Like time and tide, Mr. Hark waits for no man. He is constantly revving the engine, and he loves the growl from the gunning.
