Heroic trio + Executioners (chinese with english st)
The heroic trio, 1992 ![]() Director: Johnnie To, Ching Siu-Tung Cast: Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, Damian Lau, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang Story: Several infants have been kidnapped all over the city during the last few weeks, the police are without a clue to finding the criminals responsible. The police increase the security in the hospital but it is not use as the children are being taken away by some mysterious invisible force. Luckily a mysterious hero known only as Wonder Woman saves one of the children while the other is taken away. The father of the missing child is a high placed police officer who hires the services of a woman named Chat, she is a professional bounty hunter. Through a strange twist of events Chat and Wonder Woman end up working together against a far greater treat than just a simple kidnapper. Review: Heroic Trio is a movie of the genre we like to call Comic Book Action, the name for the genre comes from the fact that the characters, story and general setting is the kind of thing you would find in a comic book. You can expect many far fetched things to happen in this movie, so it is important not to watch this movie as if it were serious else you might find some of the things in it stupid. To get a good idea of this movie think of super heroes that do fantasy Kung Fu (no special powers). The story is straight forward and in essence silly but there are some interesting twists between the main characters and their interactions. The main characters are pretty exceptional in this movie, each of them unique distinct personalities and reasons for their actions. Besides the 3 main characters the rest are basically support and not much importance placed on them, even the villains seem somewhat minor. But going back to the 3 main characters we find they could have put a lot more focus on their backgrounds. They are pretty cool and you want to know and see more about them, there is already a decent background but its mostly essential information to make the story work. Being a comic book type movie you can expect a little action from time to time, alright so maybe there is more than just a little. There is a high level of action during the movie yet they still manage to tell a story that does not make the action seem senseless. You have some Kung Fu mixed with a lot of fantasy kung fu style special effects (some of the special effects are not perfect but that is not important). One of the heroes does use guns but its seem like a mix of kung fu and gun fighting, looks very cool when Kung Fu is done with an M60 in hand. There is a lot of great ideas action wise for some of the scenes in this movie and of course some scenes you will find funny because it is just a bit cheesy, so don't take it too seriously. The subtitles were very good quality, and there is not too much dialog to read. Heroic Trio is the kind of movie that if someone who has never seen HK cinema, sees it for the first time they will simply find it stupid (in the sense of something not serious). These movies may seem cheesy to the typical north American viewer but there is a certain mind set look at these types of movies. When we started watching the movie we found lot of the scenes in the beginning quite funny, not because of any comedy (there was none) but more for the fact that the most impossible things happened. Just like you would read a comic book for fun, watching this movie is just that for fun to be entertained. We do not recommend this movie to anyone who is not familiar with Hong Kong cinema, perhaps fans of comic books might find this interesting but even then do not imagine the American movies based on comic books because you not be on the level of this movie. Executioners, 1993 ![]() Director: Johnnie To Cast: Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, Damian Lau, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang Review: Where THE HEROIC TRIO was fun however, this second, and so far last installment, drops all intentional comedy to portray a far darker, gothic-style world. A nuclear war has come and gone and the survivors are left to try and rebuild Hong Kong. The water supply is contaminated by radiation and one man, Mr. Kim, has discovered a way to purify the water. Instead of releasing this for the public good, however, he has instead created a for profit company called Clear Water, in which he charges outrageous prices for the safe water and thus, makes the very essence of life a valuable commodity (A slam on the horrors of capitalism 'natch). One that induces water bandits to commit raids on the supply trucks and even threatens to topple the government. Of course, there is absolutely no correlation between this water company and oil companies, none what-so-ever . . . honest! Coming off the fun of THE HEROIC TRIO, it took some time to get into the unexpected seriousness of Heroic Trio 2: THE EXECUTIONERS and Johnny To understood that by making the first 15 minutes of the film brutal, and then the rest of the movie harsh. Heroic Trio 2: THE EXECUTIONERS is a very nihilistic film and our three fun heroes, Wonder Woman (Anita Mui: XIAO SHENG MENG JING HUN, HEI XIN GUIHAVE), Invisible Woman (Michelle Yeoh), and Thief Catcher Chat (Maggie Cheung: YUAN ZHEN XIA YU WEI SI LI) have all fallen on hard times. Only Chat, is living more or less as well as she always did thanks to her street fighting ways and her business, which is a vigilante for hire. Chat will work for anyone if the price is right, The government, the military, or crooks. She is a money grubbing amoral black marketeer, but as lovable in her own way as Han Solo. The world of the Heroic Trio has become dark and dirty and Wonder Woman, whose real identity is that of Tung, wife of Inspector Lau (David Lau), is now a Mother. When Invisible Woman is called upon to find a new source for clean water, she calls upon her former two allies from the first film. Chat however cannot be bothered because there is no money in it and the last ones who looked for the water died of radiation poison. Tung can't do it because she has to take care of her daughter. As their world and civilization crumble around them however, they realize they must come together to fight the evil that threatens to overwhelm them all. For a fan with U.S. sensibilities like mine, I was more than eager to get into the storyline upon adjustment if it wasn't for the fact that, with every sad scene in the movie, and there are plenty, the music would not only swell to soap opera proportions, but the singing would start of the kind I'd not heard since Jeff Wayne gutted War of the Worlds on the album soundtrack, later made into a mediocre video game. The singing just popped me right out of the mindset of the movie. It could be a cultural thing. At any rate, the story here is actually better in this second go round as is the dialogue. The action never lets up although the flying fight scenes that we have come to know and love so well from Hong Kong Fant-Asia cinema wait until the last third of the movie, building up for the final showdown of course. The ending is everything you could want from such a film - I promise you won't feel let down. PW: malamute http://rapidshare.com/users/MF5FJ6 Last edited by mallam; June 28th, 2008 at 08:28 AM. |
