but is ramadan where you have to fast for a certain period of time?

and if so, then aren't there special times when you can eat, and certain foods at that?

That's right. A month of foregiveness if you can grasp this opportunity. From dawn till sundown, keep away from earthly pleasures and be patient.
No eating, no drinking, no sex and you have to be careful what you say ie do not offend anyone, no foul language and help the poor as much as you can

In the month of ramadan, the muslims fasted between morning nautical twilight (Imsak) until sunset (Maghrib).

They can eat any kind of food after sunset until the next morning nautical twilight (Imsak). Therefore it means that they fasted during the day and unfasted during the night.
